Writing
LYN RASMUSSEN

Writing is not a hobby for me. It's hard work. I'm a
painstakingly slow writer. This hinders my progress
as I go backwards and forwards, over and over and
still I'm never happy.
Short Stories
sound of the ocean and my grandparents Ted and
Hilda Dansey, were close to me when I wrote this
story. Although, technically, I'm probably a better
writer now, Swimming to Motiti still holds a special
place in my heart. Later, the Correspondence School
of NZ used Swimming to Motiti in their English
curriculum.
Some other published short stories are: 'Rima', 'Mum',
'Goodbye Milly' and 'Alice O'Reilly Goes to Town'.
Children's Literature
I produced two series of oral histories which were
published by Lands End Publishing (bought out by
Shortland Publications). These soft-cover books were
used in the social studies curriculum in some schools
and one of the series was shortlisted in the NZ Library
& Information Children's Book Awards. I've also had
work published in the NZ School Journal.
Other Writing Credits
I founded and published my own niche-market
bi-monthly magazine before selling it to a larger
publishing company. Freelance articles have been
included in various print publications.
I've worked with authors to facilitate publication of
their work, particularly Charger Morrison/Connor
McKenzie, a well-known NZ outdoor writer.
Romance
Although my work has been
highly commended in the
prestigious NZ Clendon
Award, I have yet to publish
a full-length romance. I hope
to remedy this before too
long and can't wait to
change these particular
words on my website! I
belong to Romance Writers
of New Zealand, an excellent
organisation whose
membership includes both
aspiring and multi-published
writers.
Suite101
I'm the
Aus/NZ/Oceania
Travel Feature Writer
for online magazine
Suite 101. These
short pieces are ideal
to keep me practicing
my writing craft.
While most of my
stories are about
travel in NZ, I have
covered other topics
as well, such as the
sustainable papercraft
story illustrated
below.
Online writing
presents different
challenges to working
in print. I've learnt a
tremendous amount
about keywords and
SEOs that will help
build a residual
income over time.
Write Away by Elizabeth
George is one of my
favourite writing resources.

'Swimming to Motiti', my first
published short story as an adult,
won first prize in a national short
story competition. I drew on
dearly-held memories of summer
holidays at Maketu, a tiny coastal
settlement in the Bay of Plenty.
